I was hesitant about buying these, doubting they would work as advertised, especially at that price point. But I'm so glad I did. They were very easy to set up and install on the curtain track over our sliding glass doors with our new curtains (also purchased on Amazon along with the track). These can be controlled by an app on my phone. You have to buy two of them if you want curtains that part from the middle, still a steal compared to automated track which goes for hundreds more. These can be controlled by an app on my phone. You do have to buy two of them if you want curtains that part from the middle, one for each side. Still a steel compared to automated track which goes for much more. I love that we can set this up to open and close at certain times of the day to keep the heat out of the room on really hot days. There are two speed modes, standard, which is pretty fast and shown here, and something called quiet mode I think which opens much much more slowly and quietly. I believe that mode is designed to light into a bedroom gradually in the morning without waking you up. The set of curtains shown here (also from Amazon) block UV light have a rich linen feel and look and cost about $160 for both panels, pleated, each 8 feet wide. The track itself (also from Amazon) was easy to mount. I bought enough to cover the full 16 foot width of these doors for $85. That adds up to $430 plus tax for an entire entirely new, beautiful window treatment that keeps the sun from fading our wood floor and rug in the morning .

The SwitchBot Curtain is one of those smart home devices that just makes life easier. I installed it on my heavy, energy-efficient curtains, and it had no trouble opening and closing them smoothly. Now, instead of manually adjusting them throughout the day, I have them set on a schedule to let in natural light in the morning and close at night for privacy.
Setup was surprisingly simple, and the motor is quiet but powerful. The battery lasts a long time, but I have an outlet right next to the curtains where I installed this and will likely go that route instead of the solar panel. The curtain opener also integrates well with other SwitchBot products, making automation seamless. I have it exposed to Home Assistant and it works like a charm!

I’ve got a huge smarthome setup and have automated quite a few things, so when I ordered this I kind of knew what I was getting myself into. I ordered the product and just let it sit for a while because I was dreading the typical setup > get confused > something goes wrong > troubleshoot for hours loop that typically comes with this kind of product so when I finally got around to installing it, I was pleasantly surprised.
The setup was super easy and instructions were clear and concise. It came with everything you need and there were no serious issues.
Attached some videos to show the smooth running. I was actually concerned it would struggle with the bump in the curtain rod where the smaller one goes into the bigger one but it had zero issues with it.
I also ordered the solar charger to go with it and it snaps right it and hangs from the base of the device, keeping it in sunlight to charge with almost zero installation outside of unboxing and plugging it in.
A couple important notes for others that I didn’t know before buying: these aren’t issues at all, but just stuff to be aware of that I didn’t see or didn’t think about before hand.
1) If you have a support in the middle of your curtains (like a 3rd bracket in the middle to hold your curtains up), you’ll need a second SwitchBot to open both sides and can’t use just a single one.
2) The solar charger does hang down from the main switch bot and would be visible during the day if you had sheer curtains. Some folks may not like that. Also, if your SwitchBot is defaulting to having your curtains all the way to one side or the other, it may not have the solar charger in the window long enough to charge. You CAN fix this, however, because they’ve got a really neat feature built in where you can tell it to auto charge during the day by bringing the SwitchBot into the sunlight no matter where it’s at, when it needs to. This just means your curtains won’t be at your preferred setting for a bit while it charges, but it really beats taking it down and charging.
3) Lastly, you do need a slightly thicker curtain rod - not crazy thick, maybe about the size of a US nickel or a little smaller. I have a pretty thin curtain rod on one side where I started, but it’s the telescopic kind so the other side is thicker and I flipped it over and it was fine. The little arms that hang on the rod actually have a lot of room to adjust to account for a lot of sizes, but they can only get so small so if you’ve got very thin curtain rods, be advised.
That stuff all told, I’m very happy with mine and am planning to buy a few more now to fill up my curtains! I’m enjoying it quite a bit!

I was initially skeptical about how functional this device would be, but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The setup does take some effort, especially if you have grommet curtains, where the included grommet clip and beaded chain are essential to prevent the fabric from flattening and creating excess friction that can hinder smooth operation. In addition, if your curtain rod consists of multiple connected sections, the bot may struggle to cross the gaps. I found that taping these joints created a smoother path, and improvs performance significantly. Battery life is impressive, but removing and reinstalling the device for charging can be a bit cumbersome.

I've never tried the first 2 iterations of the curtain motor, but this third iteration felt very polished. From just unboxing the device, you can see a lot of care was made in designing it as there is very little wasted space in the packaging.
It was quite easy to set up although I found the instructional diagrams included in the package a bit hard to read as it's very small. Fortunately, the app comes with the same instructions both in image and video form. My only complaint is that the main part is hard to snap into the hooks while it is hidden behind a curtain and due to the poor visibility, it made it difficult to align the two parts correctly. My hope is that curtain motor 4 might make it even easier to attach a curtain rod.
While I was only able to use the rod-shaped variant with grommet curtains as those are the only kind that I have, I was very impressed that it can support so many different curtain types. It had no trouble with my curtain rod despite it being a very thin oval-shaped rod.
I didn't follow the instructions exactly for the grommet type curtain as the instructions mentioned that I needed to add chains for the grommets and also an magnetic sticker to indicate to the device where to stop, but it seemed to work just fine without them. The app supported manual calibration where I defined where it should be closed and where it should be open and the device was able to keep track of how far it needed to move.
The curtain motor also supported detecting when you're attempting to manually open and close the curtain and will automatically move once you pull the curtain a certain distance. In practice, I was only able to get this behavior to trigger 25% of the time. Besides that, my only complaint with this is that if you have a curtains that open in the middle, then you need two curtain motors to open and close both sides which can get pricey since at the time of writing this review, it cost just under a $100 after tax.

I have this set up for a rod with grommet hole blackout curtains for an 8-FT window. It took me about three weeks to get everything set up because I was using the wrong curtain rods. The ones that have grooves and the ones that are telescopic DO NOT WORK. Even when you use the plastic beads, the included stickers, or rod tape, the motor wheels and/or the grommets always get snagged because there’s too much friction. Short of going with a 3/4 inch 10-FT galvanized pipe (which is 1” OD), I luckily found a 1-IN curtain rod on Amazon that had SPLICE connectors to connect each rod section. With a little bit of finagling for the end rod for the finial, this completely supports Switchbot’s curtain motor.
To complete the little ecosystem, I also have a SwitchBot IR Blaster/Hub2 and a SwitchBot remote on wall. The hub is awesome because of Alexa compatibility and now I can control a Dyson fan and a ceiling fan with the IR functionality too!
